The University of Wisconsin–Madison will strive to create an environment where use of alcohol does not prevent students from realizing their highest potential of intellectual, physical and human development. The university will use evidence-based alcohol policies, programs and services to assess its progress through measurable goals and objectives.

UW-Madison Alcohol Policy Philosophy Assumptions:

  1. Alcohol affects student retention, engagement and academic success.
  2. Alcohol affects campus climate.
  3. Data and measurable goals should inform campus policy and services.
  4. Prevention of alcohol misuse is the responsibility of all members of the campus community.
  5. Campus alcohol policy should contribute to local and state efforts to reduce alcohol abuse.

Chancellors Advisory Group on Alcohol and Other Drugs

The Chancellors Advisory Group on Alcohol and Other Drugs committee is a cross-campus policy group providing overarching analysis and leadership on campus alcohol policy and advising the Chancellor on initiatives relating to alcohol.


  1. Guide the development of a comprehensive alcohol plan which addresses the important health, academic, social, financial, and safety issues related to alcohol and other drugs and includes measurable goals to guide efforts.
  2. Review and update the campus alcohol plan at a minimum annually or as needed.
  3. Implement a comprehensive campus-wide evaluation strategy for the campus alcohol plan.
  4. Routine benchmarking of student alcohol use and strategies.
  5. Review campus alcohol policies to assure that clear and appropriate policies are adopted, disseminated, and enforced.
  6. Make recommendations to the Chancellor regarding campus alcohol policies and their interpretation and implementation.
  7. Support the implementation of evidence-based policies, prevention, and intervention programs, services, and enforcement methods.
  8. Charge and support other campus committees of students, faculty, and staff to address alcohol issues on campus.
  9. Align campus communications regarding alcohol policy, philosophy, and expectations.
  10. Maintain community partnerships including coalitions to allow coordinated, environmental response to alcohol.
  11. Advise the Alcohol Policy Coordinator and the UW-Madison representative to the Alcohol License Review Committee.
